Song for you — I Love You

Matthew VanFossan/ July 23, 2024/ Forgiveness, Love, Music

This is a song about reconciliation and forgiveness between two people. It’s also a song about finding love inside of oneself and the courage to continue loving even after feeling hurt.

I first wrote the chorus to this song as a kind of devotional prayer. Then I started to build a song around “I Love You” as I thought about situations when it’s hardest to say those words. I find that loving has infinite depth, and yet when it’s expressed in the world the forms it takes may at times be full of seeming imperfections and mistakes, misunderstandings and faux pas.

The challenge then is to love past the mistakes, to return again and again to love as unconditional and ever-present — a willingness to accept all of what life brings.

I Love You

Let’s start again
Come back to when
We could read each other’s minds
Read between the lines
And more than what we read
Is what was left unsaid
The smiles and the light behind your eyes

Now let’s forget
What was never meant
To be said in the first place
And with this act of grace
We can laugh like children
for no good reason
The anguish and the hurt are now erased

I love you

Love is a test
We do our best
And it isn’t always right
But we’re brave enough to try
If we keep the heart open
Even what gets broken
Becomes healed again in the light

Love is a magic
Love is a cure
Love is an answer
That much I’m sure
But the greatest poetry
Doesn’t mean a thing
Unless you find that love is always yours
It’s always yours

I love you
